Edo Secondary School wins NNPC/Shell Cup

 

SAINT Thomas Basic Secondary School Benin, Edo State has emerged the champions of the 2014 All Nigeria Secondary Schools Football Championship (NNPC/ Shell Cup).

The Edo state representative claimed the title they won last in 2003 after defeating their counterparts from Brightville College Ibadan, Oyo State by 4-3 via penalty shootout after playing a 2-2 draw in the regulation time in the final match played yesterday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos

St Thomas opened scores through Moses kalu in the 60th minute before Onyeji Abiye of Brightville College Ibadan equalized in the 72nd minute and took the lead four minute later through Eghosa Osaze. Edo state leveled scores in the 77th minute while Oyo state lost a controversial penalty that could have given them the victory at the dot of time.

St Thomas won the star prize of N2.5million as each of the 20 players got a cash prize of N50,000 while the runners-up got N1.5million with each of the 20 players pocketing N45,000.

Government Model School, Kontagora , Niger State placed third while, Dangogo Secondary School , Bungudu, Zamfara State finished fourth.

10 students from the participating schools were awarded scholarships for distinguishing themselves in the tourney.

Among the beneficiaries were Lucky Johnson from Niger State,Sheriff kazeem from Oyo, Abdul Abdulmuminu, Niger state, Emmanuel Ode, Zamfara and Sadiq Tajudeen from Oyo. The rest were ;Eghosa Osaze, Suleiman Mohammed, kehinde Kehinde, Oyo; Bashiru Shehu, Zamfara anmd Moses Kalu from Edo state.
