DANGERS OF DEHYDRATION

In terms of composition, water makes up at least 60 percent of the total makeup of the human body. The body needs water for proper functioning. Dehydration is when the body doesn’t have sufficient water and fluid to carry out its normal function.
Dehydration can be traceable to several reasons: not drinking enough water, diarrhea, vomiting, intense physical activities without taking in water, and others.

However, our body’s thirst mechanism can help us detect our body’s need for water and possible fluid imbalance. Paying attention to our body system can be of tremendous help in maintaining our good health.
Dehydration shouldn’t be taken lightly or seen as inconsequential because it can lead to life-threatening health complications.

DANGERS OF DEHYDRATION

1) DEHYDRATION LEADS TO CONSTIPATION
The body’s system of transportation is fluid transportation. Substances are moved through the body by fluids.
When you are dehydrated, it makes it difficult to get rid of wastes from the body.

2) DEHYDRATION LEADS TO SKIN PROBLEMS
The skin needs water to remain fresh. The body system needs water to flush out toxins. When there is no water, acnes, bags under the eyes become visible. Dehydration leads to skin dryness. The more hydrated you are, the more smooth and wrinkle-free your skin will be.

3) DEHYDRATION LEADS TO COMPLICATIONS IN THE BLOOD AND BODY CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
As the body loses more fluid, it affects the blood vessel leading to the shrinking of the blood vessels. Another complication is a case where the heart needs to keep pumping blood and end up pumping thick blood.

4) DEHYDRATION CAN LEAD TO KIDNEY AND URINARY PROBLEMS.
The excretory system needs Fluid to function effectively. When there is little or no fluid, it can even lead to kidney infections, kidney stones.

5) SEIZURE & SHOCK
Fluid imbalance can be of critical consequence. When there is a shortage of electrical cells to carry signals to the brain, the results can be severe.
Another serious complication is when there is a drop in blood pressure and a dip in the oxygen level in one’s body. It is the most critical.

6) DEHYDRATION LEADS TO DRY MOUTH
If you are dehydrated, it affects your saliva production. Your mouth becomes dry, which leads to mouth odor. Start taking plenty of water to aid your saliva production and avoid mouth odor.

PREVENTION AND CONTROL
-Avoid tea, soda, caffeine when dehydrated.
-Drink plenty of water always to stay hydrated, especially in hot seasons
-Whenever you’re going for exercise, take drinking water with you.
-Give ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) to kids who have lost body fluid due to diarrhea.
