Ebola Fears: Doctors make U-turn, say schools can resume Sept 22

THE Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, yesterday, made a U-turn as  president of the group, Dr. Kayode Obembe, told lawmakers and other stakeholders that the resumption date of September 22 for schools as scheduled by Federal Government was okay.

The NMA had previously argued that schools should not be re-opened until all those under surveillance for Ebola Virus Disease in the country were certified free.
Obembe said: “It makes scientific sense for schools to resume on September 22 as proposed by government.

“All cases so far in the country had epidemiological link directly or indirectly with the first index case and apart from  this linkage in Lagos and Portharcourt there is no evidence of Ebola Virus Disease, EVD transmission   in the country.”

Obembe, who spoke at an interactive session with members of the House of Representatives Committee on Education and other stakeholders, further explained:  “We hope that all the remaining contacts in the list in PH remain asymptomatic and do not escape from ‘quarantine,’ then we should be fine for now while maintaining that eternal vigilance and surveillance.
