Inculcating Leadership Skills in Teens: What Schools must do

Some people may be born leaders, but a lot of training go into making them become the best they could be. In the same vein, some are not born leaders, but can be trained to lead. In a world where the ability to effectively and efficiently lead others and oneself is a necessary  skill to possess, our schools cannot but avail students the opportunities to learn said skill. That is why I have rounded up some of the ways schools can help train teenagers to become efficient in the art of leadership. See the pointers below…

Teachers and the entire school management should set the right examples of leadership. Teenagers, just like the rest of us learn faster by observing the teacher more than they do by being taught. Bearing this in mind therefore, teachers and school heads must ensure to exhibit the best standards of leadership so that they may be emulated by their students and replicated.

Continuously encourage teens to engage in team activities. It is only in teams that people can lead. Nobody can lead in isolation. That said, students must be encouraged to engage in team activities during which those with leadership tendencies will be recognized and brushed up and those lacking such would also be trained and made better.

Teach them the three most pivotal skills in leadership- communication, negotiation and decision-making skills. Trust me, hardly can anyone make a good leader without first possessing the above enumerated skills. A good leader must be able to communicate effectively, negotiate effectively and make appropriate decisions. Most people are not born with these skills; they are learnt. It therefore behooves of teachers and the school system in general to teach them.

Other Things to teach them-

  1. The importance of hard work
  2. The need to always persevere
  3. Tolerance
  4. The need to be visionary
  5. The need to always take charge of situations
