The Second Edition of the Social Media Week Lagos which hosted Africa’s largest Social Media gathering has just rounded up in the past week.’s “How Nigerian Secondary School Students are going digital” which was the only Education Focused Event will surely be remembered as one of the highest points of the 2014 Social Media Week in Lagos.

Some of the special guests that attended the event include Mr. Obi Asika – CEO, Storm Records and Chairman of Social Media Week Lagos, Mrs. Yemi Keri – MD, Edo State Information Communications and Technology Agency, Ms. Ajibade Oluwatosin – Blogger (Olorisupergal), Ms. Nnodim Blossom – Curator, Blcompere, Mr. Bolade Oyekanmi – Digital Marketing and Mobile Content Manager, Samsung West Africa

In her opening remarks, the Program Moderator – Ms. Modupe Olateju, Founder/CEO, The Education Partnership Centre, shared her perspectives on Education in Nigeria and the need to adopt technology to foster learning.

In relaying how Nigerian Secondary School Students are moving to Digital, Mr. Stanley Muoneke – Business Development Director, Intel West Africa, spoke on the need to integrate Technology and Education to foster Learning in our Secondary schools.

Mrs. Roseline Ilori – MTECH Communications took time to drive home the need for Private sector support for E-Learning Initiatives and how its sustainability goes a long way in affecting the overall outcome of such initiatives. She also emphasized the need for parents to improve their knowledge of the usage of technology as it concerns learning, in order to curtail their wards from turning their learning devices into negative influence. 

In addition to what Mrs. Roseline Ilori said, Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo – Director, Corona Schools spoke to the need for Teachers in Secondary Schools to familiarize themselves with new Technology hardware and software to aid them in effectively teaching their Students.

She also posited that education should not be taught in schools as a subject or discipline, but should be wielded as a tool to develop both the environment and the human mind.

Mr. Bambo Bashorun – Director of I.C.T, Osun State Government represented by Mr. Sam Omoruyi of Phillips Consulting pointed out the success the Osun State Government has recorded with the Opon Imo initiative. He went further to explain how the tablet was specified to suite the primary and only purpose for which it was initiated.

Toyosi Akerele, CEO Rise Networks, the creators of Passnownow closed the Sessions by thanking all who attended stating that the strong belief of the Team is that the future of Education is Mobile and children do not have to be confined to physical spaces for effective learning. Beyond that, Technology is a leveller and should be seen as a complimentary tool for the revitalization of Nigeria’s Education Sector.
