School children lament bad roads, flooding in Ikorodu (Lagos)

Students of the Odogunyan Junior and Senior Grammar Schools in Ikorodu, Lagos, on Thursday decried bad roads and lack of drainage channels in the area.

Some of them said in Lagos that the dilapidation of Spintex Industrial Road, Odogunyan, caused flooding of the school premises anytime there was rainfall.

The students also said that potholes on the dilapidated road got filled with flood during rainfall, causing them to fall down.

They said that they were tired of wading through flood and falling into the potholes.

An SS3 student, Wisdom Donald, told NAN that the Spintex Industrial Road had been in a bad state for years.

“This road has been like this; whenever rain falls, all the water flows into our classrooms because there are no gutters.

“We want the state government to help us because we always suffer during rainy season.

A JS3 pupil, Isaac Ogbadu, said: “We fall in the mud and dirty water if rain starts when we are on the way to school.

“We want the government to fix the road,” he said.

Christian Azuka and Sarah Akaeze, SS3 and SS1 students, respectively, also appealed to the state governments to construct drains and fill the potholes to reduce the hardship faced by the students and other road users.

A teacher in one of the schools, who refused to mention his name, also regretted the situation.

“Water enters the JS1 and JS2 classrooms; the students virtually sit on the water because water submerged the seats.

“The situation is so bad, but we are not allowed to talk to the press as workers of the Lagos State Government,” he said.

Also, Toyosi Dolapo, a JS3 student of the Living Stone College, who helped pupils to cross the road told NAN, “We are suffering; children go to school in fear anytime it rains.”
