UNICEF’s Intervention to keep 8,000 Girls in School is quite laudable!

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has recently donated the sum of one hundred and sixty naira [N160,000] as part of efforts to keep girls in Katsina State in school. The Katsina State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) acknowledged the receipt of the donation, noting that such a move is a move in the right direction towards educating the girl child.

Mr. Alhaji Lawal Buhari, chairman of the Katsina State Universal Basic Education also hinted at how the money would be disbursed among the eight thousand girls. According to him, each girl would receive the sum of N20,000 naira each and the money will be expended towards getting such necessities as school uniforms, books and other items. Beneficiaries of the scheme will include girls from extremely poor background. And the selection process will cut across all the local government areas in Katsina State.

Hopefully, such a scheme will eventually help eliminate  the spate of girl bride in the northern region of Nigeria even as female children are finally given the basic tool they need for success in life.

Many thanks to UNICEF. This is indeed a laudable gesture!
