WHEN YOUR PARENTS OFFEND YOU…

We can all agree that except for some rare occasions, parents are typically the perfect and ideal role models anybody could have. They are seemingly perfect and always there to guide us as we grow through life. There is no [caring] parent that would ever allow their children to fail. As a matter of fact, your parents are the only people in the world who truly want you to be successful even more than them. This explains why they are always there to caution you, guide and discipline you as you grow. As they do this on a daily, the possibility of them going overboard with their disciplinarian task abounds; therefore they are likely to offend you every now and then. As a matter of fact, some of the most painful emotional hurts endured by most children are usually caused by their parents. And trust me it can be really saddening to have one’s parents offend them.

So what should you do when your parents offend you? Your reaction in such a circumstance is very important and it is advisable that you remain calm even while letting them know that you are hurt. Do not ever try to argue with them or demand an apology. Just feel bad for the meantime that you are hurt and if your parents truly love you, they will apologize to you.

Now mind you, it is rare to see parents fully admitting that they are wrong. Remember that they are supposed to be the role models, the ideal perfections whom you must aspire to be likes.  Therefore, it may be rare for your father to beg you for forgiveness especially in Nigeria. They may try to give you cues suggesting remorse such as petting you, seeking your face or buying you gifts; those are typically their way of apologizing. Some people may be lucky to have simple parents who can easily and readily offer an apology. Take the apology, please!

Meanwhile, just in case you happen to have parents who constantly offend you and never apologize, you should find a good time to talk to them. Mind you, it must not be immediately they have just offended you; this is to avoid you saying something impolite. Instead, go to them only when your emotional state has calmed down and then talk to them [politely] about some of the things they do wrong.

In all, it’s important that you have the uttermost respect/regards for your parents. You owe them that every single day of your life even when they offend you. After all, they are your parents…

Best!
